Roy, our resident naturalist, gives us the full scoop:
“Acorn woodpeckers! They live in family groups and often have a ‘family tree’ called a granary where they communally store their acorns. It allows the acorns to be protected from other animals that eat them and also dries the acorns individually which protects them from rot. During spring and summer, they mostly eat insects and flowers or fruits, but all winter they rely on their stored acorns for sustenance. A granary tree like the one in your photo is one that has been passed down for generations. Pretty amazing little critters.”

Whispertree is dedicated to a regenerative future, one that is sustainable and honors our connection to each other and nature. This space is curated to support and rejuvenate the change-makers who also hope to write a new story of care in pursuit of the common good for humanity and the Earth that nourishes us.
